With the global reliance of the Internet publishing now covers more than just the arts. If we take the definition back to its origins publishing can be defined as 'the act of telling your story to those who will listen'.
At TradShack we refer to the activity required prior to promotion and the two go hand-in-hand; publishing and promoting are key to the success of any service - 'tell them your story - ask them to invest'.

You cold define self-publishing as 'what those who can't get a proper publishing deal have to do'. Cynical perhaps but true in some cases. Or you could choose not to pursue a 'real' publishing deal and cut out the middle man (after all publishing companies keep a good portion of your potential income for themselves).
