Icarus Wings and Here in My Arms are dedicated to my daughter, without whom this collection would never have happened. Icarus Wings documents the pain of letting go and the feeling of abandonment once the fledgling flees the nest. Here in My Arms is about how the experience of a new-born child can utterly demolish the bullet-proof exterior of the guy that walked in these shoes before.
The Ballad of George Herbert is a tribute to George Herbert Leigh-Mallory, the British climber we all hoped could have made it to the summit of Everest, and way before Hillary claimed the title. Sadly, Mallory’s ascent was curtailed by injury and bad weather but it is strongly suspected that his associate Andrew Irvine carried on to the top. Mallory was found preserved in permafrost by the American climber Conrad Anker and his team in 1999. Mallory was dressed in tweed, the sales receipt still in the pocket. The body of Andrew Irvine has never been found.
In Too Deep, Sunrise and Leaving Home are in celebration of the memory of MB.
See You There Tomorrow, Hecuba’s Door and I am Slander are reminders of how cruel we can be to others when we mistake friendship for opportunity, kindness for weaknesses and the resulting reverberations from the abject emptiness of solitude.
Rufus Rides That Train is a cowboy tale inspired by, of all people, Ragi Omar, Somali-born British journalist, writer and former BBC world affairs correspondent. I wonder if he ever knew?
Beauty Queens and History are reminders from the past to pay more attention.
Hi Ho Indian Joe could not be omitted as it’s what started this journey; a children’s song composed at the keyboard with my infant daughter sitting on my knee; living an imaginary world where simply being dressed as an Indian chief can conjure up adventure, excitement and tear-inducing laughter from within the mind of a five year old; all about mischief and the hilarious, limitless fun had from the sublime art of growing up.
