The Ballad of George Herbert is a tribute to George Herbert Leigh-Mallory, the British climber we all hoped could have made it to the summit of Everest, and way before Hillary claimed the title. Sadly, Mallory’s ascent was curtailed by injury and bad weather but it is strongly suspected that his associate Andrew Irvine carried on to the top. Mallory was found preserved in permafrost by the American climber Conrad Anker and his team in 1999. Mallory was dressed in tweed, the sales receipt still in the pocket. The body of Andrew Irvine has never been found.
