At first the warriors did not see the Yuki-Onna. They huddled in the orange glow of the fire that overtook the gloom from the fading yellow sun. The grey clouds above offered nothing but inclement weather so, comforted by their sake provision, the warriors settled down for the night with the promise of heroic tales and song. The light from the fire flickered their shadows onto the pale bamboo forest behind them.
The bamboo leaves began to rustle, more of a shimmer but enough to silence the warriors. From the glow of the fire, an apparition of a young girl appeared, shrouded in white silk, veiled in her long white hair, her lotus-bound feet hovering above the forest floor.
Then the flames from the fire died plunging them into darkness except for an ice-blue incandescence radiating from the young girl.
Yuki-Onna spoke, her words coming from afar, as if from the depths of a cave or the distant whisper from within a shell.
‘Be not afraid… I am here for you. I have a message from Kitsune.’
‘The Kitsune and The Hatamoto’ is a fantasy set in medieval, feudal Japan. The Kitsune, a shape-shifting fox revered in Japanese folk lore, seeks revenge for the death of his father by a young Samurai warrior bent on fox hunting, a practice banned by the Feudal Lords for the disrespecting a deity. The reader follows the journey of the young fox and his transformation to Kitsune, at which point the tables turn on the young Samurai, now a Hatamoto, guardian of the flag and loyal officer to the Feudal Lord.
